SIMPLE FACELIFT TIPS
Although they won't last forever, the results from a traditional facelift will last a lot longer than the results from a mini facelift or from a non-surgical option, such as a filler or Botox. Since people age at different rates, how long one person's results last can be very different from how long another person's results last.
Genes aren't the only factor that determine how long your facelift results will last. Your habits and lifestyle also play a part. Make the results from your surgery last as long as possible by making some changes to your life. Ten years down the road, when your face still looks youthful and fresh, you'll be thanking yourself for the small changes you made today.
Focus on Your Health
Although a facelift focuses on the external features of your face, smoothing out sagginess and easing the appearance of lines and creases, what you put inside your body plays an important part in how well the surgical results hold up. What you eat, drink and inhale all impact your surgical results.
Smoking or using tobacco is one way to speed up the aging process and quickly undo the results of your facelift. The nicotine in cigarettes and other forms of tobacco disrupts blood flow. Decreased blood circulation in your skin keeps it from getting the nutrients it needs to stay youthful looking and smooth. Smoking also destroys the collagen in the dermal layer of skin. Without collagen, your skin is more likely to sag or droop, since nothing is there to hold it up.
If you do smoke, you usually get a jumpstart on quitting before surgery, as most surgeons strongly advise quitting at least two weeks before a procedure. Quitting before surgery and remaining smoke-free for at least two weeks afterwards helps cut your risk for complications and helps your body heal more quickly after the surgery. Quitting is tough, but your surgeon can provide guidance to help you through it and to help you stay away from tobacco after your facelift.
Another way to improve your health and extend the life of your facelift is to take a close look at your diet. The healthier your diet is, the more likely it is your facelift results will be lengthy. Try to steer clear of eating a lot of sugar, as it leads to the production of advanced glycation end products, which can play a part in the aging of your skin. Instead of sugary foods, try to eat foods that contain a lot of nutrients and vitamins, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean meats.
Stay Out of the Sun
In Florida, it can be difficult to avoid exposure to the sun. But, doing so will help you maintain the results of your facelift for as long as possible. Ultraviolet light from the sun contributes to the aging process, leading to age spots or hyperpigmentation and lines and wrinkles. It's particularly important to avoid exposure to the sun in the first few days and weeks after your facelift. During that time, your healing skin will be very sensitive to the sun. Sunlight can also cause the healing incisions to discolor, making them more visible.
If you haven't started before your surgery, it's helpful to get in the habit of wearing sunscreen, with an SPF of at least 30, everyday. A combination product, such as a moisturizer that contains sunscreen, can make it easy to remember to apply it. Along with using sunscreen, you can further protect your face from the sun's aging rays by wearing a hat when you're outdoors, putting on sunglasses and trying to avoid spending a lot of time outside when the sun is at its most intense, usually daytime between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Get a Boost From an Injection
Another way to keep your face looking youthful for longer is to give it a boost with an injection. Some people decide to get Botox injections performed at the same time as their surgery, to enhance the results. Botox injections focus on a different area of the face, so they are helpful for creating a balanced look, too.
Dermal fillers can also enhance or extend the life of your facelift. Depending on the type of filler injection you receive, it can help smooth lines or wrinkles or add volume to your face. Your surgeon can help you choose the filler that will provide the most benefit.
