Per the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, fewer men requested Botox Cosmetic injections in 2013 than they did in 2012. While this number may have seen a slight decrease, the number of men seeking dermal fillers to combat the signs of aging did increase.
Unlike Botox that blocks nerve impulses that control muscle contractions, dermal fillers actually add volume and help smooth the skin. This alleviates the appearance of creases, lines, and wrinkles for a span of anywhere from six months to over a year, depending on the type of filler used. Learn more about three popular injectable fillers offered by Dr. Nathan Nachlas, a renowned Boca Raton facial plastic surgeon.
Juvederm is one of the most popular injectable fillers on the market. The gel filler is made of hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally within your body, so it is safe and effective at adding volume and smoothing the skin. The FDA-approved gel filler does not require an allergy test due to its safety. It's commonly used to fill in the nasolabial folds that run from the side of the nose to the mouth. Once injected, Juvederm generally lasts at least nine months.
Following your treatment, avoid alcohol, strenuous exercise, and direct sunlight for a day. There are very few side effects that follow Juvederm injections. The most common include bruising and tenderness at the injection site. This is not different to the soreness that occurs after a routine vaccination. You can use cold compresses to help alleviate some of the discomfort.
Radiesse, a calcium hydroxylapatite filler, adds volume below the skin, but it also helps boost your body's production of collagen. As the body absorbs Radiesse, the increased collagen stores help maintain the skin's smoother, more youthful appearance. As a result, some patients find Radiesse lasts more than a year.
To help alleviate discomfort during and after the injections, Radiesse contains a small amount of lidocaine. Bruising and swelling are common complaints after the injections, but these do not usually last more than two or three days.
Restylane is beneficial in reducing the appearance of nasolabial folds. Like Juvederm, the dermal filler contains hyaluronic acid. It's also useful for plumping lips. Bruising, swelling, and tenderness may occur after the injections, but they do not last long. Men and women who use the filler to lessen the appearance of nasolabial folds report seeing the benefits for up to a year and a half if one touch-up treatment is given a few months after the initial filler injection.
